Teaching Philosophy Statement

Teaching is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding occupations. I have a great love of learning that am eager to share with my future students. I am committed to offering an equal education to every student. I welcome the unique gifts and talents that each child brings to the classroom. It is my role to help each of these children build knowledge based on what they already know.
I believe learning should occur in an environment where students feel safe and comfortable to be themselves. An environment that allows them to interact and learn with and from each other. It is also important for children to be part of the classroom community, taking ownership for their actions, being involved with others. And in helping create a community of learning. In addition, within this learning environment children need to be recognized for their efforts, as well as their accomplishments and that it is ok to make mistakes.
Furthermore, not all students learn in the same way. As a teacher I need to be sure to address the needs of each individual student. I believe this can be accomplished through the use of Howard Gardners Multiple Intelligences. Therefore, by incorporating the Multiple Intelligences into the curriculum I can foster students engagement in the classroom. Students also need hands-on activities and projects to facilitate students learning. Likewise, cooperative learning is important in the classroom. I believe that though cooperative learning children can acquire social, listening, encouraging, and organizing skills.
In conclusion, my teaching philosophy is a work in progress. I am constantly learning and growing as a teacher. I am sure in years to come I will ass to it, modify it, and make it more specific, and well rounded. However, I do believe that when these principles are applied it will give students the skills they need for life, such as problem-solving critical thinking, and becoming life-long learners.
